How to pick a name that works
- Two syllables is the sweet spot. Long enough to carry across a park, short enough to say a hundred times a day.
- Avoid names that sound like commands. Kit sounds like sit, Bo sounds like no, Ray sounds like stay.
- Hard consonants and a bright ending vowel cut through background noise better than soft, trailing sounds.
- Say it out loud in the voice you would use to call the dog back off a beach. If you would be embarrassed, pick another.
- Check nobody in the house has the same name, and that it does not rhyme with one.
- A puppy learns a new name in a few days, so if the shelter name is not working, change it.
